Smart Sista

Most of my life I have had a fairly decent relationship with my older sister, Kelly.  Beings that we are only two and half years apart in age, we have always been buddies, pals, friends.  Sure there were some moments in our early years when she wasn't so sure about me...like the day my parents brought me home from the hospital and she asked them to take me back.  Or the days that we would fight over toys and I would pester her in the back seat of the car for the entire five hour trip to Herman.  There were also the days that I was jealous of her being older and having more privileges.  She became much "cooler" than me when she entered her freshman year at the new Southern Valley School.  I specifically remember the day she wouldn't give me the keys to get something out of the car, and I shoved her into the lockers in front of all her friends in the high school hallway.  She really hated me that day!

Then we grew older and she became more mature as I became more independent.  I think she worried about me a lot through my collage years.  I was always jealous of her accomplishments though, and sometimes I wonder if I would have pushed myself a little farther maybe I would have a doctorate too.  OK so that is really not likely, but a girl can dream, right?  Today, however, we are both adults, both mothers, both best friends and I am extremely proud to call her my sister and I will absolutely hate not having her just minutes away. She is really not thrilled about me moving an hour away either, but she is able see past her own desires and is excited for me and this new chapter of my life.

Although we have had our moments over the years, she has always been there for me.  My life would have been very lonely without her.  She has always been the type of sister that I loved and hated all at the same time.  She is older, wiser and better at most things, but I always had a friend that I could count on.  And as a bonus she gives good, solid advice!

Just last week I was complaining about an itching sensation that I had been experiencing for two weeks and she encouraged me to have my blood tested.  This scared me enough to take her advice and to call my doctor immediately.  Sure enough she was dead right.  Apparently, I have hypothyroidism and will need to take medication to balance me back out.  Now, not only do I have to hate her for being right I have to love her for saving me from gaining 50 pounds!

I am so very lucky to have such a smart, loving, wonderful, sister, friend.  Maybe someday Jentry will be lucky enough to have the same.  Most likely though, she will have an annoying little brother and I will have absolutely no advice to give her.

As someone once said, "An older sister helps one remain half child, half woman."  I could not have said it better myself!

Is It Weird? Volume II

Is it weird that my three(and a half)-year-old daughter....

Had her first memorable dream about computers?

Can pop her own bag of popcorn in the microwave, that is located above the stove, without any assistance at all? I swear she is half human half monkey.

Has, along with her four-year-old cousin Isaac, created a special "Bum" song that they sing every time they are together?

Wants to be certain to pack the child safety door-lock that her mother uses to lock her in think time when she is being really naughty?  "Mom, we will need this.  What if I am naughty at Nathan's house?"  Give it two years and she will not only want to leave it but will be hiding it from me!

Rubbed orange slices in her hair to make it smell good?

Tells everyone in the bathroom that you don't have to wash your hands if you use "hanitizer"?  This is such a different era than in which I was raised.  What happened to good old soap and water?

Asked her mother if it was OK to swallow jellybeans if they tasted like bubble gum?

Thinks that Jesus will simply bring her back to life if she gets hurt and dies?  This after reading the story in her toddler Bible about Jesus bringing the widowed woman's son back to life.

Has gone to an actual nail salon with her cousin, Stella (2 years of age) to have their nails done.. complete with design?

Can use an iPhone better than her Grandmother?  No offense, Mom, but this is a true fact.

Sometimes talks in a British accent after watching her favorite show Peppa Pig?  This is a British animated television series about an anthropomorphic female pig and her family and friends.

Is worried that if she takes all of her toys with her to our new house in Sutton, that the new little girl moving into our old house will not have anything to play with?

Thinks that anything with a mint flavor is "kinda spicy"?

Announces every night, while she takes off her underwear, that her bottom has to breathe?

Circus Time

It's that time of year again... time for the circus to come to town.  Specifically, the Sesostris Shrine Circus to come to Lincoln.  This is the third year we have taken Jentry, and I must say that this year was the best year yet!  The circus itself was comparable to previous years, however Jentry was finally old enough to sit for the two hours of entertainment and actually, well, be entertained.

She had a wonderful evening of fun with her parents.  First we went to Tico's for supper before the show, because it is conveniently located across the street from the Pershing Center.  Jentry ordered a bean and cheese burrito and lemonade all by herself.  Shocking that she would order beans, I know.  That girl would live on cans of Pork and Beans if only her mother would let her.

Next we walked over to the show and Jentry insisted on carrying her own ticket.

Once inside we had to stop and take a few minutes to absorb the sites.

Once Jentry saw the ponies, she immediately wanted to ride.  I finally gave in this year and allowed her go around in a circle twice for $5.00.  It was worth it... I suppose.  She did seem to have a lot of fun.

Next we found our seats and settled in to enjoy the show.  We saw clowns being goofy, bears doing handstands and riding motorcycles, sky devils riding a motorcycle on a tight rope and Jentry's favorite...Jeffery's Jalopy.  That old, junky car was the one thing Jentry remembered from last year.  What can I say, the kid is weird.

Jentry quickly spotted a vendor selling snow cones.  It did not take her long to catch on to the process of getting their attention either.  She waved her hand big and the vendor was heading her direction until her mean mother looked the other way to avoid having to deal with the sticky mess.  At intermission, I did give into her request.  I had previously promised her that she could bring her dollar bill and buy one thing with it at the circus.  I clarified to her however, "You can have a snow cone but that will be your one choice and you will not get anything else." To which she replied, "Yep, because I have one monies, so I can buy one thing.  If I get more monies though, I can buy more things, right?"

We also stopped to get a butterfly painted on her face.  She chose an orange and purple butterfly.  She proudly explained to the artist, "Because that is my favorite color and mommy's favorite color."  I melted.  She looked so sweet.

During the second half of the show we saw sky masters, an aerial diva, hoopla hoop artistry and Anna Louis the dancing elephant.  Anna Louis was my favorite part of the show, just in case you were wondering.

Jentry doesn't often get to spend time with both mommy and daddy spoiling her at once, so I am certain she had a wonderful night.

Working Hard

I received the following photo from daycare today.  The director's comments were:
"Jentry was working hard at table time this morning. :)"

I anxiously opened the attached picture and immediately started laughing out loud at this...

Working hard?!?!  Perhaps she was channeling Einstein.

That girl makes my life light up.

A Weekend of Different

Last weekend was a big weekend.  A big weekend of things being different.  Not necessarily different in a bad way just different from the usual.

1.  I worked from home Friday morning to allow a real estate agent to show our house.  I placed it on the market March 1st.

2.  I picked up Jentry from daycare right after lunch.  This was terribly exciting to her because, this meant that she didn't have to take a nap.  Well at least not at daycare anyway.

3. We drove straight to the McKenzie's house so that Jan could entertain Jentry while I conducted interviews for daycare in Sutton.

4. Nathan rode with us to Orleans and we ate at Paddingtons instead of Grandma's kitchen.

5. Anna and Jentry played with tractors instead of dolls.

6.  Anna is now somewhat mischievous instead of the innocent little baby.

7.  Nathan and I were able to get away for awhile and enjoy a cruise around my old stomping grounds.

8.  It was a beautiful, warm day in March... in Nebraska!  Simply unheard of.

9.  A few hours later it was snowing and Papa only had one new baby calf after twelve the day before.

10.  Jentry got to drive us around for a change.

11.  Someone got a picture with me in FRONT of the camera.

12.  Jentry got to pet a baby calf and learned where milk comes from first hand.  Papa even squirted her with a little of the white stuff.  That naughty Papa!

13.  Jentry was able to convince Papa to take her for a tractor ride into the sunset.  OK, so that is not so different than the usual.

14.  Nathan got to take Jentry for a wagon ride.

15.  Snuggles even got to go for a ride.
16.  And because Papa felt left out, Jentry took him for a ride too.

17.  On Sunday, Jentry and I got to go to church with grandma and I even allowed her to go up front for the children's sermon. This is something I said I would never allow, because of my fear of what she might say.  I have to give her credit however, she was a perfect angel and even answered one of the pastor's questions.

18.  Sunday afternoon we drove back to Lincoln and stopped by my real estate agent's office to sign a purchase agreement.  Yes, much to my surprise the house sold in only three days time.  I am still in a bit of shock, but I am ecstatic that I don't have to keep my house spotless for weeks on end.  With a closing date of April 20th, more change is yet to come.

Sutton will be different.  A different town.  A different size. A different lifestyle.  A GOOD lifestyle. Ready or not here we come!
